An ending.

What's with this obsessive love-hate relationship with time that we have? Why do we keep it so tightly bound to our wrists, to our minds, to our moments?

We could never have enough of time. Today our concept of it rides upon ancient Babylonian ideas of the year and months and days, and we develop newer and newer methods to be more and more precise with its passing: down to milliseconds, nanoseconds---splitting hairs, strand upon strand upon strand but ultimately it is the same hair on the same head.

Time isn't that space between the ticks of the second hand. Nor is it the passing of Monday to Tuesday to Wednesday. Or the entire stew of concept of leap years, meridians, time zones and Mayan calendar. All of these are arbitrary labels assigned to measure the passage of human life.

Living is what time measures, and is also the measure of it.

The wind in your face when you open the car window at ninety or so miles per hour on an empty stretch of highway. That is time.

Wetness, while you walk under a drizzle in a June afternoon.

Or a long directionless conversation over coffee and cigarettes. That is time passing.

A nice nap after a good meal.

A photograph. That is time captured.

Or a night, when you fall asleep in the arms of that person you love, and your head is in that crook between the arm and the chest, and their breathing is soft and the air is flavored with them, and outside the stars burn as they have long burned before our time and as they will burn long after it, and there is nothing you really have to do or be or get to for the time being.

That is Time, with a capital T.

I Subtract Nineteen Eighty Three with the Present.

I have aged another year. Although it doesn't matter much, aging. Because I stopped counting since I was about 17. Even now when filling out forms, I pause to think, to calculate, before filling in "Age".

It seems strange, when you think about it: they say youth is wasted on the young. Conversely, I suppose that old age is wasted on the elderly. We spend most of the beginning of our lives being too young for things, most of our twilight years being too old for them. In between is that narrow path in which we be what we want to be--and even then we hurry about doing this and that and ignore the possibilities nested in the tiny gap between here and now.

Pupulutin ka sa kangkungan (Your corpse will be found in a spinach pond).

Philippine cinema has long been out of business since dog-knows-when. Most of the film productions that get funded nowadays are either about comedy, romance, rom-com, or some occassional horror. But it's very rare to see good films or least to say, a variety of, released in the local silverscreen. I guess we're just a big TV industry.

I kinda miss watching old Tagalog films. The catchy lines, stereotypical characters, and even predictable plots. But at least you know that they're making films out there. I think those days were gone with Lino Brocka. Though there may be few independent filmmakers who struggle to penetrate the mass media, the vast majority of the local audience still preferred to watch senseless love stories of their favorite love teams.

Joel Limchoc managed to intertwine the popularity of TV-watching and the good ol' days of local cinema. He picked out a 70's action theme for a Pepsi advert and made it even quirkier with the literal/visual translations of the dialogues not to mention the use of vegetables as weapons (meets the MTRCB requirement!). The result is nauseating, epic, and brilliant.

Heligolanding

In a dystopic world, long after most of the living creatures have gone, the ones who are left would have evolved into another form of species. Hierarchies will be altered, including way of life. The bulls will have their way with the humans. They will be pitted against each other in an arena, only this time the humans would be the ones charging at the cape. This is done to honor the gods in order to appease them and return the humanity that once were as what we have done long before great civilisations.

Censored version:

Uncensored version:

Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum? Less than 5% of the artists in the Modern Art sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female.

Music and lyrics are powerful tools and can be instigating factors to real-life violence. Black Metal had always been associated with church burnings, Satanism, murders, national socialism, misanthropy, and countless suicides say for a classic example the death of Mayhem's vocalist Pelle Ohlin (aka Dead). It also inspires many artists to create beauty out of chaos, or how things with grave or less meanings can be reanimated into something else, like zombies--they're stripped of vitality, yet somehow they get life back into them.

I touched a Totoro Metal Ninja Man.

For the first time in a long time, after being away for a while, I have never been this excited to go back to the sandpit. And here are few good reasons to rejoice:

Primo. David Lynch collaborates with Interpol. Lynch's animated short film titled I Touch a Red Button Man premiered as a visual presentation in the set of Interpol's Lights during their Coachella Music Festival performance. It has been described as (according to the official website Matador Records) a juxtaposition of the seen and the unseen, as the observer becomes the observed...exploring the deepening layers of covert surveillance, morphing data acquisition into visual beauty and questioning the fine line between the viewer and the voyeur.

I admire Lynch as an artist in his own right. He has done his own music for some of his films and others and one of my favorites is the collaboration with Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse from the album Dark Night of the Soul, which then featured his artworks on the album insert. I am not so keen about this Interpol Under Surveillance project, although it's nice to see him explore other forms of media aside from filmmaking. And being unconventional is what Lynch is best known and most notorious for.

Segundo. I just downloaded the album, Princess Ghibli, a much-awaited project called Imaginary Flying Machine which features Studio Ghibli songs played by metal bands from different parts of Europe and Japan. And my oh my, what a delightful, little, evil concoction indeed. Here's the trailer:

Personal picks: Sanpo (My Neighbor Totoro) by Living Corpse and Nausicaa Requiem (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) by Neroargento both featuring Yoko Hallelujah. Other bands included in the project are Disarmonia Mundi, Blood Stain Child and Destrange. All I can say is, "It's about time, Mr. Miyazaki."

Tertio. Another schlock body-breakin' electronica remix video? Why not. Here's the clip for this film's electrofunk music video Dance Norweigan Ninja Dance.

I wish someone would also do an electronica dance remix for the Turkish Star Wars training montage.

Now, I can finally have some coffee.

Life in black and white is not so boring

Nothing cheers me up more in a gloomy weather than a delightfully dark, obscure teaser that is somewhat reminiscent of David Lynch and Guy Maddin.

Aura
Pater Sparrow

Life in black and white is not so boring if you'd come to think of it.

I've been re-compiling my Sonic Youth playlist on iTunes only to realise that The XX is a more upbeat and lo-fi version of them. It made me chuckle upon the sudden discovery.

Just for fun, here are my 7 quintessential Sonic Youth songs. I picked 7 because it's a magical number.

01. Hoarfrost - A Thousand Leaves
02. Safe in Hell - Demonlover OST
03. Winner's Blues - Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star
04. Disconnection Notice - Murray Street
05. Turquoise Boy - Rather Ripped
06. Unmade Bed - Sonic Nurse
07. Little Troubled Girl - Washing Machine

And with that, I shall now leave you in peace.

Eggs Benedict

Wow. A first of something could be the last of another.

So it's 10 am here. Where ever I am. I was roused by a bad dream about aswangs and giant trolls with one eye. I got up, sat on the edge of the bed, and snapped back into reality.

I felt hungry.

There is this one bar close by where I like to go for brunch now and then. I customary order eggs Benedict with a 9-ounce steak, and for free drinks (the prix fixe menu includes two drinks) I usually go with red wine. Almost without exception, when the waitress comes back to inquire about my second drinks selection, she asks, "One more of the same?" And I reply, "Yes please, one more of the same." I find this exchange of phrases quite philosophical. And I get one more of the same and it's almost as good as the first one.
